Goldbergs Department Store - Main Entrance - Edinburgh Branch
I wrote this to a friend and just felt I had to share a real trip down memory lane with you:
This photo brings back floods and floods of memories for me.
Goldbergs is the department store that me and my mother went to shop at all the time in Edinburgh, sadly demolished a few years back to make way for another office for the Royal Bank of Scotland.
That entrance photo takes me back. Built in the 50s it must have cost a fortune, glass front, huge high ceilings, air conditioning, amazing place considering its age and when it was built, not that long after World War II.
From the beautiful sculptured ‘G’ shaped handles on the entrance doors, which I loved. To the entrance foyer which used to have a LaserVision player going all the time in the 80’s. Remember those, before DVDs?
The front shows the older logo above the door and the new logo (derived from the owners signature) to the right on the banner.
Wrygges was their own fashion brand and I used to goto Wrygges Man for my jeans which didnt cost the earth but lasted forever.
You can see the Are you being served? style dummies in the window, the one on the right looks like it might even have a fur coat on, how 70s/80s, LOL
They were the first shop to have their name made into the carpet, which at the time was so cool I nearly passed out! The whole shop was refurbed mid 80’s and looked amazing.
Great staff, so friendly it became nearly a second home we went there so many weekends, even if we just ended up on the roof top restaurant which had great views over the city from its huge terrace. And served the best breaded haddock, peas and chips ever!!!!
See, told you it brought back memories. I miss this place like you will never know. If I had a time machine…….
